Deborah Thomas
"I am a painter. My work is primarily and foremost about 'being' in the studio and to experience the process of creating through the act of painting. I am now at a point between expressing observation, memory, and imagination. The landscape motif is a point of departure for exploring the dynamics of contrast in color palettes, as well as, color and shape relationships created within a defined space. I believe there is a universal spiritual connection between humans and the forces and influence of nature. The need to express that connection in a visual form is ageless, and the question of timelessness or contemporary influences becomes moot. I make that connection by expressing my responses through painting. Through varying degrees of abstraction, I focus on capturing the essence of a moment in time and a sense of place rather than ‘recording’ a recognizable place. As no camera can capture what I feel; what I experience is close within my soul. My paintings are vistas that inspire the imagination, a place of being and who I am. The surface of the canvas is no stranger to what I bring to it, but the end result provides color, texture and atmosphere. No matter what size the canvas, the enormity of my images is daunting, and the viewer inevitably experiences a sense of a different realm.” Deborah Thomas is originally from southwest Missouri, and has always been fascinated with colors, shapes and textures found in nature and the rhythmic, lyrical flow of open spaces. Thomas has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Missouri Southern State College, Joplin, Missouri in 1981, and a Masters of Fine Art degree in Studio Art from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois in 1985.
