Dan Grych
I came to DeKalb, Illinois in 1972 to finish my Bachelor of Fine Art degree at Northern Illinois University in Painting and Drawing. My 35mm Pentax was primarily for documenting my art for portfolio purposes, but I had two photography classes that taught me creative uses of the camera, and a friend who gave me several of her Time Life photography books in exchange for an accounting book. The Pentax was eventually upgraded to a Nikon. The camera travels better than most art materials and can grab moments, light, shadows, reflections, people and a piece of history. I have lived in DeKalb, Illinois for thirty-two years, the greater part of my life. It was a dichotomy of my parents' origins, my father from a farm in Wisconsin and my mother from a suburb of Chicago. DeKalb is an urban environment placed in a rural setting, once a Mecca for the greater rural communities. The archival quality of black and white photography has been time tested. My parent’s photo albums bare witness. Color photography had no appeal to me because of its color instability. Even though my black & white photographic imagery was primarily for artistic purposes, it also contains documentary overtures.
